The Nazis looted the art collections of Baron Alphonse Mayer von Rothschild's Viennese palaces in 1938. As a Jewish family the Rothschild's were forced to flee the country, but had most of their collections returned to them after World War II. Some objects were subsequently sold, such as this sculpture purchased by the MIA in 1957.
